With a name like this Brevet Major General Jeff Davis did lead an
interesting life. He was at Fort Sumter, SC during the initial bombardment
in April, 1861. He is also known for killing his superior officer Major
General William (Bull) Nelson after having his face slapped during an
argument. He was never tried for that crime as the Union Army had a need for
experienced field commanders
