(3-93) Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. 8 mi. S. Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of the Mississippi, marching north from Corinth, attacked and partly overran U.S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee, which was enroute by river to destroy the base. Arrival of Buell's Army of the Ohio, and its entry into the second days fighting neutralized earlier Confederate success and forced withdrawal to Corinth


(3-93) Approach to Shiloh, April 5, 1862. In this area, anticipating Confederate attack from north northwest, Maj. Gen. Lew Wallace, commanding 3rd Div., Army of the Tennessee, stationed his 1st Bridge.; Col. M. L. Smith, 1st Mo. Inf. Division command post was also hereabouts, it withdrew to join the Shiloh engagement the afternoon of Apr. 6, but arrived there too late to engage until the following morning
