150th Anniversary of the American Civil War

(2011-2015)

March 26-27 Bennett Place Historic Site. TARHEELS: Soldiers of the Old North State. Ever wonder where the term Tarheel originated? Living Historians will demonstrate life of the more than 125,000 Southern soldiers who served the Old North State during the American Civil War. Visit with Confederate soldiers as they exhibit the uniforms and equipment of North Carolina soldier. Soldiers will demonstrate the marching, musket firings, and camp life around the Bennett Farm throughout the weekend. Program is Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. April 2 Bennett Place Historic Site. Civil War Park Day. This national workday for volunteers is a cooperative effort between the Civil War Preservation Trust and Civil War parks across the United States. Come out and support your local Civil War park. Projects include preparing the Spring garden and landscaping, preparations for the 146th Anniversary Surrender commemoration and other upcoming events. Program is 10am-4pm. April 16-17 Bennett Place Historic Site. 146th Anniversary Surrender Commemoration. This is a signature event of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War commemorative series marking the largest surrender of the American Civil War, which helped reunify the United States. Visit the reconstructed Bennett Farm on the exact location where the generals convened to sign the terms of surrender. Guest speakers and authors will make presentations on the five major surrenders of the war (Appomattox, Bennett Place, Citronelle, New Orleans, and Doaksville). Sunday there will be a wreath laying ceremony held at the Unity Monument along with special presentations and guest speakers. Additional living history programs and lectures will be held throughout the weekend. Event activities are ongoing Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday, 10am-3pm. May 14 Bennett Place Historic Site. Planting the Fields. Join the farm staff as they prepare for the spring planting season. Visitors will have an opportunity to get hands on experience learning about how the Bennett family and other North Carolina farmers made their living in agriculture and their enduring survival during the time of the American Civil War. May 20
Bennett Place Historic Site. Confederate Memorial Day (North Carolina Observance).
This is a signature event of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War commemorative series
.
Join living historians portraying the American soldier who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Learn how this traditional observance of sacrifice and honor has coincided with the recognition for all American soldiers since the Civil War. This also marks the 150th anniversary when North Carolina seceded from the Union. Program is 10am-4pm. Admission is FREE and donations graciously accepted. May 28 Bennett Place Historic Site. Memorial Day Remembrance. Following the American Civil War Memorial Day began in small communities across America, which recognized those soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Following the war, General John Logan, a Union officer on Major General Shermans staff, was instrumental in making this federal legislation possible. Join American soldiers with a United States Military Through the Ages memorial program. Program is 10am-4pm. Admission is FREE and donations graciously accepted. July 16-17 Bennett Place Historic Site. Union Occupation in the Carolinas. Following the surrender at Bennett Place and other surrender sites, Union forces continued to occupy the Southern states until law, order, and rebuilding of a devastated part of the country could be restored. This period was known as Reconstruction. Union forces finally left North Carolina on July 4, 1868, but continued to occupy Southern states for nearly 12 years. Join Union soldiers at the Bennett Farm as they discuss the days after the surrender and Reconstruction in North Carolina. Costumed living historians will establish picket posts, patrols, inspect civilians for contraband, cook, write letters home, and demonstrate the other aspects of life of the Northern soldiers who served as occupation forces in the South. Soldiers will be encamped around the Bennett Farm throughout the weekend. Program is Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. Admission is FREE and donations graciously accepted. October 8-9 Bennett Place Historic Site. Road To Secession.
This is a signature event of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War commemorative series
. In July 1861 the first major battle of the American Civil War was fought in Manassas, Virginia. The new Confederacy won the battle, and new recruits from the local communities began to swell the ranks South and North. Experience what life was like for the people of Piedmont North Carolina during the beginning months of the American Civil War. A recruitment station and encampment will be established on the grounds of the Bennett Farm, much like camps organized throughout North Carolina and the South, recruiting men to defend the Southern cause. Nineteenth century civilian interpreters will enlist in the army and be transformed into soldiers. Stump speeches, patriotic music, and other relative activities will demonstrate the spirit of the Southern cause. Civilian interpreters will also exhibit the domestic chores such as cooking, sewing and gardening as their husbands and sons headed off to war. Program is Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. December 10-11 Bennett Place Historic Site. Christmas in the Carolinas During the Civil War. Visit Bennett Place during the holiday season and witness how Christmas was celebrated in the Piedmont Carolinas during the Civil War. Living historians will decorate the farm in a typical modest fashion. There will be music and caroling along with refreshments served. Program is Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 10am-3pm.
