Great site and page.
Really enjoyed the tour. Have been to Shiloh twice and am looking
forward to travelling to the U.S. in March to take part in the

As a new Civil War

and information are complete and bring me back to that era without
having to leave my office. I'm grateful to all of your contributors.
I just read "Widow of the South" and was amazed to find all the
information about the Franklin, TN battle right there, complete with
photos. I expect to be a very frequent visitor. Thank you.

I have a little interest
in the Civil War. Have been to Antietam and to Gettysburg, Pa. That
was great ! My wife and I spent a couple of days there. We were
there 6 or 7 years ago. Someone found a body at the old rail bed the
year before. When we were there they had the burial for the soldier.
What I have seen of your site so far it looks good. Have a cousin
who is tracing family tree. Hasn't found anyone from our family who
fought in the war.

My GreatGrandfather(3
removed)fought in these battles. He was Second LT. Joseph Ashton.
General Cleburne in his telegrams to Stanton, United States
Secretary of War, during the battle of Missionary Ridge, November
25, 1863, Charles A. Dana said of the fight on the extreme north of
the line: "Sherman undertook to take by storm a battery which the
rebels obstinately maintained upon the hill above the tunnel. I saw
the column sent up for this purpose twice repulsed, falling back the
first time in disorder." General Cleburne, who defeated Sherman on
this field, said in his report: "On the top of Tunnel Hill a space
was left clear of infantry, and Swett's battery of four Napoleon
guns, commanded by Lieut. Harvey Shannon, was posted on it so as to
sweep north," in the direction of the ridge that Sherman occupied.
When the serious fight of the day began about 11 o'clock a heavy
charge was made on Swett's Battery at the apex of the hill. "The
artillerymen stood bravely by their guns under a terrible crossfire,
and replied with canister at short range, but still the enemy
advanced." When within fifty paces of the guns a charge by Smith's
Texans drove back the Federal line, though Smith and Mills fell
wounded. A second assault was made, which Lowrey's Mississippians
aided the battery in repelling. "In these attacks Lieutenant
Shannon, commanding Swett's Battery, was wounded. The command
devolved on Lieut. Joseph Ashton; in a few minutes he was mortally
wounded. The command then fell on Corporal F. M. Williams. So many
non-commissioned officers and men had been killed and disabled in
the battery that Colonel Granbury was forced to make a detail from
the infantry to work the guns." (Cleburne). A lull coming in the
battle, two of the guns were sent to take the place of others found
inefficient, and Lieutenant Key with his battery came up and took
command on Tunnel Hill, after which another attack was repulsed.
Swett's Battery was bravely fought, said Cleburne in conclusion,
"was hotly engaged all day and lost some noble officers and men."
Thanks for the great site and hope to visit there in the very near
future!
Enjoy visiting your site

War reenacting a few months ago, and I use your site to find a lot

I found this while
searching for information on Champion Hill. I grew up in the Jackson
area and moved to Texas 10 years ago. I went to Hinds Jr College in
Raymond and have been around the battle sites all my life. Just
today, Dec 23, 2006 walked the new Raymond battlefield site with the
new markers and cannons, they did a really good job of it. My
In-Laws live just down the bottom of the hill from the old Raymond
Courthouse so we're here every year at Christmas. I have enjoyed
this site and have found it very useful to learn more about the
history of the areas where I grew up. Thank you for a very thorough
site and such great pictures and information. Mark

I've read much about
this battle because of family interest: a great, great grand uncle
was killed there at age 17. He was a member of the New York 5th
Volunteer Infantry, know as "Dureay's Zouaves" and was a Drummer.
I inherited a photo of him in his Dress Blue Unirorm: he appears
quite young (he was 17 at the time of the battle.).
Although I've read much about this battle, but my understanding of
the area was incomplete; your pictures show that the flat topography
significantly contributed to the inordate number of casualties on
both sides. The ground is basically flat, superbly accomodating the
weapons of the day which fired in a flat trajectory. I hadn't been
able to visualize this from my readings. Your pictures show that
this was a perfect killing ground and the enormous courage on both
sides to fight in this kind of battle.
What an awesome sight. I
could never really find any good information on how the Champion
Hill Battle was fought until now. Are there any projects currently
underway to get this hallowed ground into a registered Civil War
Site Preservation? Is there any campaigns to save the Coker House?
I'd like to help! I am e-mailing you from Afghanistan. When i get
back home I would like to visit the battlefield if possible. Thanks
again for an awesome tour, Ray

I live in the home of W.
H. L. Wallace. He is buried not 30 yards from my front door. His
family of friendly spirits occasionaly walk the halls...and I love
it all-the history, the research, the legacy.
Nice site. I came in
looking for pictures of Fort Morgan as I'm actually from Alabama and
have a site dedicated to family letters from the Civil War. I also
have some old maps available for download through my site. Please
feel free to check out my site and look through my information.
We loved Gettysburg; got
married there, considered moving there, took dozens of week-long
trips, spent many thousands of dollars there. But those days are
over thanks to park superintendent John Latschar. He's ruining the
battlefield while calling it restoration. Desecration is more
descriptive. We decided if we spent another dime we'd be supporting
the destruction. Trees are being ripped out by the acre. The deer
have been slaughtered. Visiting the battlefield on a Nov. evening is
something everyone should be able to experience, but he shortened
the hours. Now you'll be ticketed and labeled criminals. He likes
saying, "The time for comment was during the planning, not now."
Well, Bozo, the public DID and continues to comment, but you ignore
them for your self-centered agenda. Thousands have voiced their
concern, but you act as though the battlefield is your own private
domain. It belongs to the taxpayers, not an arrogant government
appointed bureaucrat. Ghost hunters have been turned away in droves.
Not only is the town losing a fortune toward the local economy, the
park is losing thousands of watchful eyes from some of the most
respectful visitors. Those with evil intent will always gain access
at night as was proven by the recent vandalism, closing the park
merely keeps honest folks out. John Latschar has, in affect, given
vandals free rein. Attendance is lagging, he blames everything
except his own bumbling policies. He moans about never having enough
money, yet continues wasting funds on mindnumbingly senseless
projects that divide the townspeople and drives others away. It's
typical government ineptness. Looks like John Latschar sits around
dreaming up new ways to piss people off. If he's not shooting the
wildlife he's screwing with direction of traffic. If not that he'll
come up with some other dumbass plan. Will John Latschar donate the
lost revenue from his own pocket? LOL! Chances are he'll eventually
move on to another location leaving his mess and debts behind for
someone else, much as he did in the past. The only thing worse than
allowing John Latschar to inflict so much damage to such hallowed
ground is; too few have the balls to do anything about it. Talk is
cheap, holding back spending speaks volumes. We're doing our part.
Good bye Gettysburg. You were our favorite place on Earth until John
Latschar raped you. Now you're just a memory. What a pity.

Excellent site! My
GGGranduncle served with the 42nd Ohio Infantry and was wounded 3
times from the time he landed on the east bank of the Mississippi
until he reached Vicksburg, the last a sabre wound to the left hand
at the Battle of Champion's Hill. I had always wanted to see what
the place looked like, and through your outstanding job, I now know
what he faced. Thanx!
Thank you for putting
the Civil War Album on line. These are the first pictures I have
seen of Fort Deleware, DE. My great grandfather, Jeptha D. Armstrong
and his brother, John M. Armstrong spent about 18 months in this
prison. They were captured at the Battle of Helena Arkansas on July
4, 1863 and spent a few weeks in Alton Illinois prison before being
transferred to the Fort Deleware, DE prison.
