       The 15th Reg. Mass.
Volunteers Lion Monument. This monument is located in the western part of
the West Woods and is accessible only by walking through an unidentified
path through the woods or on the Rt 65 bypass which is outside the park.
This marks the deepest penetration by the Union forces during the West
woods action. Future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr was
an officer of the 15th and was wounded at Antietam

       20th New York
Infantry monument by Dunker Church. The 20th was part of the early
afternoon attack which pushed the confederates back to the West Woods but
they were unable to hold the ground they gained. The 20th also has another
