Mississippi Monument by Donald DeLue on West Confederate Ave
This is the third monument designed by Donald DeLue located at
Gettysburg. DeLue is also credited with the monument to Confederate
soldiers and sailors in 1964 and the Louisiana Monument in 1971. The
Mississippi Monument is inscribed 1973 and depicts a Mississippi Soldier
defending the flag using his rifle as a club by a fallen comrade.
DeLue's style is characterized by exaggerated hands and feet with
small-sized heads.
The monument is located on West Confederate Ave when Barksdale's
Mississippi Brigade went into battle.
I obtained the following information about Mississippi units at
Gettysburg from Coddington, Edwin B. The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study in
Command. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1968.

Little Round Top-Monument to 155th PA Vol. Infantry
The 155th PA Volunteer Infantry was a part of the Union Army of the
Potomac's 5th Corps. This regiment is sometimes referred to as
"Pearson's Zouaves". Prior to the Battle of Gettysburg the Fifth
Corps was commanded by George Gordon Meade.
In the 817-page regimental history UNDER THE MALTESE CROSS published
in 1910, on page 649 it states the life-sized figure is a model of
Samuel W. Hill of Company "F" who is facing toward the Peach Orchard
from Little Round Top. This monument was dedicated Sept 17, 1889
with private funds and funds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Pvt William W. Wood Co "B" 155th PA Vol Infantry served here. |
