Missionary Baptist Church. The church sits near the site of the Champion
house, which endured the Battle of Champion Hill. Champion Hill: A Battlefield
Guide by Terrence Winschel, Vicksburg National Military Park Historian: Union
troops marching from Bolton reached this point about 9:45 a.m. Quickly
deploying from column into line of battle, the Federals advanced toward
Champion Hill, a half mile to the southwest. As they moved across the
fields and through the woods with flags flying and bayonets glistening in
the sunlight, they presented the pageantry of war. General Grant was here
and saw this advance. The sector of the field between the Champion house
and the Crossroads witnessed the day's most severe and bloodiest fighting.
At day's end the debris of battle was strewn across the fields and the
gruesome task of caring for the dead and wounded began. The Champion House
was converted into a hospital where amputations were performed with
ghastly efficiency. Photo by Brian Risher |
