View of battlefield from Metamora Ridge, the starting point of the Federal attack. General Ord's troops were positioned here on October 5, 1863, and attacked across the open ground running to the distant tree line. The strip of trees running left-to-right across the middle of the picture marks Burr's Branch, behind which were positioned the 1st Texas Legion and Moore's Infantry Brigade. The trees in the background, just across the field on the other side of Burr's Branch, mark the Hatchie River |
Burnap's 7th Ohio Battery (4 guns) was positioned here on October 5, to support the Federal infantry assault across the open ground in the background |
