Lorman Chancellor House
Lorman Chancellor was mayor of Middleburg and host to John Mosby for a
meal on March 8, 1863, the day Mosby left for Fairfax Court House. Mosby
was seeking revenge against Union Col. Percy Wyndham, who called Mosby "a
bushwacker and horse thief." Before leaving, Mosby said to Col.
Chancellor, "Tonight I shall mount the stars or sink lower than the
plummet ever sounded." Col. Wyndham was away in Washington, but Mosby came
out with 29 Union captives, including General Edwin Stoughton. Not a shot
was fired, despite the small Rebel band being in the center of 8,000 Union
troops |
