Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown is the final resting place for 252 Confederate soldiers, many of whom died during Lee's Maryland Campaign. Wounded Southerners were brought to Shepherdstown during the retreat, and those who died in hospitals there were buried in the local cemetery. Other Confederates were reinterred there between 1868 and 1870. Henry Kyd Douglas, a member of Jackson's staff whose boyhood home Ferry Hill is located just across the Potomac from Shepherdstown, is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. The cemetery is located ½ mile west of Shepherdstown on Route 480.
