(3-96) Southwest view from line of A.J. Smith's right approach to the Second Texas Lunette. Blue marker at lower right center marks the end of the right approach. The lunette stood on the highest part of the private cemetery. NPS 2000 Tour Guide: Manned by the Second Texas Volunteer Infantry, this Confederate fortification guarded the Baldwin Ferry road approach to Vicksburg. On May 22 it was the scene of furious fighting as Confederates beat back repeated Union attacks. During the siege Union soldiers dug approach trenches to within 15 feet of the lunette

(3-96) North view of the right line of the 2d Texas Infantry. Granite marker at right marks the spot where Corporal Thomas J. Higgins, 99th Illinois Infantry, carried the National colors over the Confederate works during the Union assault of May 22. Higgins was immediately captured and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The sign at left marks the Confederate line of the 2d Texas Infantry
