The 8th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment Monument erected in 1909 by the State of New York at Cold Harbor National Cemetery lists 219 names of the dead from this regiment. It is located along the side of the wall toward the private property between the National Park and Veterans Administration lands at Cold Harbor, Virginia. Lt. General Ulysses S. "Butcher" Grant's strategy lead to many combat losses which decimated infantry regiments and resulted in heavy artillery units being used as infantry to serve in bloody assaults on Confederate fixed positions
